Cala Saona, Formentera: Anchor + Beach Club Pairing
Skip ahead — the office handles the rest
Cala Saona sits on the west coast of Formentera — a half-circle bay framed by red-rock cliffs, with a pink tinge to the sand and water at sunset that earned the cove its reputation. The Beso Beach Club, on the southern arc, is the lunch anchor for the day.
Anchor position
North half of the bay, sandy bottom 6 – 14m deep. The south half (closer to Beso Beach) is shallower and tighter; sport boats only. Holding is good in N and E weather, exposed in westerlies — leave by 16:00 if west wind forecast.
The shore lunch
Beso Beach reservations open three months ahead in season. Book through the office at quote time; the standard is a 13:30 lunch slot for the table that runs two hours. Tender to the beach, the host walks guests to the table.
Alternate option for less-crowded days: Hostal Es Caló on the north coast (35 minutes by boat). Reservations easier; cooking is more traditional Formentera.
The sunset
Cala Saona's west exposure means it holds the sunset light longer than most Ibiza coves — golden hour runs from 19:00 to 21:00 in July, with the red-rock cliffs reflecting the last twenty minutes. The classic photograph: yacht in foreground, cliffs behind, sun setting over the open Mediterranean.
Pairings that work
- Morning at Espalmador → lunch at Beso Saona → sunset at anchor in the same bay
- Day trip from Ibiza: leave Marina Botafoc 09:30, cross to Cala Saona by 11:30, lunch and sunset, back to Ibiza by 22:00
