Es Vedrà by Yacht: The Magnetic Rock — Anchor, Wind, Photography

·5 min read·Aurelius Society

Skip ahead — the office handles the rest

Es Vedrà is a 400-metre limestone uplift two kilometres off the south-west coast of Ibiza. From the right deck angle, at the right hour, it is the most photographed silhouette in the western Mediterranean. From the wrong angle, with the wrong wind, it is a thirty-minute lump in the haze and a swell that ends the day early.

Here is what to ask the captain before you leave the marina, and what to ask the photographer before you book the day.

Where to anchor

Cala d'Hort (the photographer's anchorage)

Roughly 1 nm north-east of the rock, depth 12 – 22 m, sandy bottom with patches of weed. Holds well in the prevailing summer westerly. The classic frame: rock to the south-west, afternoon light off the rock face, cocktail in foreground.

South side (between Es Vedrà and Es Vedranell)

Closer to the rock for sunset, but exposed when the wind turns south. Use only between 15:00 – 19:00 with confirmed weather; never overnight.

The no-anchor zone

The Reserva Marina Es Vedrà – Es Vedranell prohibits anchoring within 200 m of either rock. Patrol boats do check. Stay outside the buoyed limit; the captain knows.

Wind and swell by month

  • May / June:Prevailing south-west breeze, low swell. Best month for Es Vedrà day-trips.
  • July / August:Thermal westerly afternoons (15 – 25 knots). Anchorage workable but choppy by 16:00.
  • September:Calmest month statistically. Glass water from 06:00 to 10:00 — the "blue hour" before the wind builds.
  • October:Variable. Capable of perfect days; capable of writing off the south coast entirely. Confirm 24 hours before.

Photography timing

The classic shot — rock backlit by setting sun, foreground deck and people — works in a 35-minute window starting roughly 50 minutes before sunset. The 20 minutes either side of sunset itself are dimmer and more contrasty than the magazine shots suggest.

Drone work is permitted outside the marine reserve and below 120 m AGL — but Spanish law requires registration of the operator and aircraft. We arrange permitted shots via partner operators; brief the office in advance.

The honest part

Es Vedrà is most magnetic when you arrive on a glass-flat day and the rock holds the light like a slab of fired clay. It is also magnetic when the wind is up and you can't hear yourself across the deck. The right day, on the right boat, is half the experience. Day one of a weekly charter is the right day; day six with a forecast turn is not. Captains will redirect; let them.
