How Many Guests Really Fit? Capacity vs Comfort by Size

·5 min read·Aurelius Society

Direct answer

Almost every charter yacht is capped at 12 guests for day cruising, regardless of size. For overnights, the real number is cabin count: a five-cabin yacht sleeps eight to ten in comfort, not twelve. Size the boat to how everyone sleeps, not how many fit on deck.

Skip ahead — the office handles the rest

There are two capacity numbers on every yacht, and confusing them is the single most common planning mistake. The first is the day limit — how many bodies may be aboard while cruising. The second is the sleeping number — how many actually rest well across a week. They are rarely the same, and the gap is where charters go right or wrong.

The legal twelve

Under the rules almost every charter yacht works to, the cap for guests on a commercial charter is twelve — on a fifteen-metre sport boat and a fifty-metre flagship alike. More than twelve and you are into a different class of vessel, different licensing, and a much shorter list of available boats. For a day charter, twelve is the ceiling and the boat just needs the deck space to seat them comfortably.

The number that decides an overnight

Day capacity is flat at twelve. Sleeping comfort tracks cabin count — and that is the figure that sizes a weekly charter.

The honest rule

For a day on the water, count heads and pick a boat with the deck space. For nights aboard, count couples and singles and match them to cabins — a five-cabin yacht is a six-to-ten guest week, not a twelve. Pushing the sleeping number to the legal day limit is how a beautiful boat ends up with someone on a salon sofa, resenting it by Wednesday.

Office note

When a group lands between two boats, the office often advises two hulls running together over one boat stretched past its comfort — a point we make even when it books a smaller primary charter. The week is better for it.

Frequently asked

Why are charter yachts limited to 12 guests?
Commercial charter yachts under most flags are certified to carry a maximum of 12 guests while cruising. Carrying more requires passenger-ship certification, which applies to a small, specialised class of vessels — not the typical motor yacht.
Can more than 12 people come aboard at anchor?
Sometimes, when the yacht is stationary and licensed for it — for a static event at the dock or at anchor, a higher headcount can be permitted. It must be arranged and approved in advance; it is never assumed.
