Swimmers off a yacht in warm late-summer Ibiza water

Sea Temperature, Month by Month: When the Med Is Swimmable

·4 min read·Aurelius Society

Direct answer

Ibiza sea temperature runs from about 15°C in winter to a peak near 26°C in August and early September. The water lags the air by roughly six weeks — so late August to mid-September is the warmest swimming, not midsummer. Below 20°C (before June) the swim is brisk, not lazy.

Skip ahead — the office handles the rest

A charter is a swimming holiday with a boat attached, so the temperature that matters is the water, not the air. And the water keeps its own calendar. The sea is slow to warm and slow to cool — it lags the air by about six weeks — which produces the counter-intuitive truth that the warmest swimming of the year is not midsummer but the tail of it.

Sea temperature through the season

Month≈ Sea tempThe swim
May18–19°CBracing — a quick dip, wetsuit for water sports
June21–22°CComfortable; the season properly opens
July24–25°CWarm, easy, all-day water
August25–26°CPeak — the water is at its warmest
September24–25°CStill warm, the air gentler — many captains' favourite
October21–22°CSurprisingly mild; the quiet-season swim
Approximate surface temperatures. The lag is why late August and September swim warmer than June despite shorter days.

The broader picture

Set against wind and crowd, the warm-water window points clearly at the back half of the season. The heatmap reads the whole year at a glance — and makes the case for September that the office makes all the time.

Office note

If the trip is built around the swimming — small children, long anchored afternoons, water toys — aim for the second half of August into mid-September. Warmest water, softening crowds, still-long evenings.
