Yacht Charter Ibiza for Film Production: Permits, Locations, Crew
Skip ahead — the office handles the rest
Filming on an Ibiza yacht is regulated tighter than most production teams expect. The permit chain has three layers — yacht owner, marine authority, drone licensing — and missing any one means a fine, a shutdown, or worse. The office handles the chain for production charters; here is the structure.
Layer 1 — The yacht owner
Charter agreements typically exclude commercial use (filming for sale or commercial broadcast). For a production shoot, the owner must approve in writing — usually with an additional fee (10 – 25 % above standard charter rate) and a confidentiality clause. The office negotiates with each owner individually.
Layer 2 — Spanish marine authority
Commercial filming in Spanish waters requires a permit from the Capitanía Marítima — filed two weeks ahead, naming the location, the timing, and the crew. Standard filming fee €450 – €800 per day depending on scale. Drone and aerial work require a separate permit through AESA — see our companion piece on drone and photography permissions.
Layer 3 — Anchorage coordination
For anchorages in the marine reserves (Es Vedrà, Es Caló, Tagomago no-anchor zones) commercial filming requires an additional Conselleria de Medi Ambient permit — three weeks ahead, environmental brief, and a refundable deposit (€2,500) against any disturbance.
Crew and equipment
- Yacht typically sleeps the talent only; the crew runs from a second support vessel or tender base
- Equipment storage: cabin doubles work as gear rooms (not below decks where humidity risks electronics)
- Power: yacht inverter usually covers two cameras and lighting; bring a generator for anything heavier
- Sound recording: yacht generator noise is the biggest enemy; plan ADR or boom from the tender
Cost reality
Total cost for a 3-day yacht commercial shoot (mid-size flybridge, 6 crew, drone work): €18,000 – €40,000 above standard charter rate, all permits included. Send the brief at quote time.
