TFFJ · Gustaf III — St. Barthélemy (SBH)

t. Barths — eight square miles of French volcanic Caribbean — is the West Indies' winter UHNW concentration, defined by the fortnight between Christmas Eve and New Year's Day. In those days the harbour at Gustavia holds two hundred superyachts in stern-to and at anchor; every villa above Saline, Lurin and Pointe Milou is committed eighteen months in advance; the New Year's Eve dinner at Eden Rock or Cheval Blanc Isle de France runs €2,500+ per head; the fireworks over Gustavia at midnight are watched from a hundred bows.

Outside the Christmas fortnight the island returns to a quieter rhythm: French Caribbean residential, beach lunches at Le Toiny and Tom Beach, the dive shop at Anse Marigot. February through April is the value window — warm, dry, the trade winds steady, the harbour calm enough for swim-platform mornings.

Air access is the island's most-discussed constraint. Gustaf III airport (TFFJ, SBH) has a 650-metre runway, a steep approach over Col de la Tourmente, and a published constraint to certified aircraft only — typically the Pilatus PC-12, Cessna Caravan, King Air 350 and St Barths Commuter's Dornier 228. The standard route in is jet to Sint Maarten (TNCM/SXM) — a 23-minute Tradewind Aviation hop on a PC-12 onwards to TFFJ, or a 40-minute Voyager / Great Bay ferry. Direct private jet to TFFJ is not available; this is structural.

At St. Barthélemy

Specifics the office knows.

The hotel that opens allocations in March, the airport with the short runway, the harbour that fills by 09:00.

  • 01

Eden Rock — Baie de Saint-Jean

The island's defining hotel since 1953 — the rock between the two halves of Saint-Jean beach, the seafood lunch at Sand Bar, the Sunday brunch at Le Beach House. Christmas-fortnight allocations open in March for the following December; the office holds standing-relationship access.

  • 02

Cheval Blanc Isle de France — Flamands

LVMH's St. Barths property on the long white-sand beach at Flamands — the island's quietest hotel for the New Year window, away from the Gustavia harbour noise. The Case de l'Isle restaurant runs the morning beach service; the spa is the principal in-hotel afternoon room.

  • 03

    Le Toiny — east coast

On the wild east coast at Anse de Toiny — twenty-two suites in private bungalows, each with a plunge pool overlooking the Atlantic. The most secluded of the island's hotels; the office books here for honeymoon parties wanting distance from the Gustavia harbour scene.

  • 04

    New Year's Eve at sea

The defining St. Barths charter moment — anchored in Gustavia harbour or off Shell Beach, midnight fireworks across the bow, the dinner served from 21:00 onwards by the on-board chef. The office books the boat eighteen months in advance for the December 31 night; the harbour authority allocates anchor positions in October.

  • 05

    The Saline beach hike

The unpaved track from the salt pond at Saline to the south-coast beaches — Grande Saline and Saline Nord — is the island's principal walk. Empty beaches outside Christmas fortnight, occasional turtles in February; the Aurelius office arranges private picnic delivery at the beach midpoint.

Short answer

If you are reading this briefly.

St. Barths peaks for the fortnight between Christmas Eve and New Year's Day — committed eighteen months in advance for hotels, villas and yacht charter, with Gustavia harbour holding two hundred superyachts and rates at multi-yearly highs. The structural air constraint: Gustaf III airport (TFFJ) has a 650m runway and accepts certified turboprops only — Pilatus PC-12, Cessna Caravan, King Air 350, Dornier 228. Every member arrives via Sint Maarten (SXM/TNCM) by jet and connects onwards in 23 minutes by Tradewind PC-12. Direct private jet to St. Barths is not available. The defining hotels are Eden Rock, Cheval Blanc Isle de France and Le Toiny. February to April is the calmer value window. Aurelius Society sources yachts via vetted owner-direct partners.

Questions we hear

St. Barthélemy — answered.

Can we fly direct to St. Barths?+

Not in a jet. Gustaf III (TFFJ) has a 650m runway and a certified-aircraft-only operation — Pilatus PC-12, Cessna Caravan, King Air 350 and similar. Every member arrives via Sint Maarten (SXM/TNCM) and connects onwards in 23 minutes by Tradewind Aviation PC-12 or 40 minutes by ferry. Direct private jet to St. Barths is not available; this is structural.

How far in advance do we book Christmas?+

Eighteen months minimum for the December 24–January 2 window. Hotels open allocations in March of the prior year; villa partners commit by April. Yacht charter for the New Year night books by the previous June. Late availability is rare and almost never at the prime addresses.

What's the difference between Eden Rock and Cheval Blanc?+

Eden Rock is more social — the Sand Bar and Sunday brunch, the Saint-Jean harbour entertainment, the on-rock photogenic. Cheval Blanc Isle de France is quieter, at Flamands, on the longer and emptier beach — chosen for honeymoon stays or members wanting distance from the Gustavia scene. Both LVMH-tier; different rhythms.

Can we visit Anguilla from St. Barths?+

Yes — a 60-minute speedboat run north-east, or a short Tradewind hop. Many members combine: two nights Anguilla (Belmond Cap Juluca or Four Seasons Anguilla), the rest at St. Barths. The office arranges the boat or Tradewind connection.

When does the airport close?+

TFFJ operates daylight VFR only — last landing is fifteen minutes before official sundown. In December that's around 17:00 local; in summer slightly later. Tradewind's last connection from SXM is scheduled to land at TFFJ thirty minutes before close. Late evening arrivals require overnight at SXM and morning connection.

Is yacht-based or villa-based the right Christmas plan?+

Yacht for groups wanting the harbour-side fireworks and on-board chef. Villa for groups wanting the kitchen-table holiday with children. We book both formats; many members do the combination — three nights yacht, four nights villa.
